LGBTQ+ Suicide Prevention
If you are worried about someone in your life, make sure they have access to those websites or numbers listed above and the non-emergency 211 number included here. Make sure they have plans in place when they feel like they’re getting overwhelmed, like calling the 211 number or the other numbers above, or their support network. Make sure they have access to therapists who are safe and help get them there if possible by sharing our therapy resources. It is okay to talk about suicide with people, to check in on someone’s feeling about suicide, and offer resources.
Suicide is often the result of several things going wrong in a person’s life. It’s complicated and complex. Some people can get focused on trying to stop suicidal behavior, but what you should do is focus on making sure someone is supported, feels safe, and has hope. For LGBTQ+ youth, one affirming adult reduced suicidality by 40%. Being that adult in youths’ lives can make the world of different.
