Gender Affirming Hormone Therapy For Youth

Summary of Care: All Gender Affirming Hormone Therapy for Youth will need consent from a legal guardian. As youth enter puberties at different ages, there will not be a one-size fits all approach for youth looking for medical intervention. Medical providers will look at whether starting hormones or puberty blockers is more appropriate, if the youth is able to give informed consent on medication, if they’ve addressed other concerns within therapy, and the effectiveness of hormones on patient over time. Medical treatment for youth is regarded as medically necessary and life saving treatment, with decades of research backing it up. Every effort is put in by medical providers to make sure this treatment is the right choice.

If parents have any issues with transgender or non-binary identities that cause them to question or be hesitant around starting treatment, we recommend looking as parental support groups and other resources specifically for parents on this website: https://harborhealthinitiative.org/nd-gsa-network-and-lgbtq-school-resources/.

Attention: With HB 1254 being signed into law, North Dakota is now criminalizing evidence-based medically necessary care for Transgender Youth. This law was not determined by research, doctors, or medical boards and this care is still the standard practice of medical guidelines and recommendations. We will be looking for options for youth to pursue this care in MN and updating this page when we have more information. If you have any trouble locating resources please email us at info@harborhealthinitiative.org.
